A large meta-analysis of trials assessing prophylactic antibiotics has shown significant survival benefits; clinical significance of resistance is unclear. Febrile neutropenia (FN) is a serious complication of cancer chemotherapy that can lead to delays in treatment and necessary dose reductions of chemotherapy, which compromise treatment efficacy. Febrile neutropenia is a medical emergency requiring rapid assessment and prompt initiation of antibiotics. This guideline has been developed by the South Australian expert Advisory Group on 2013-05-08 1. Febrile neutropenia is defined as: • Fever higher than 38.3°C OR higher than 38.0°C for more than 1 hour, in a patient who has received chemotherapy in the past month, AND • Neutrophils less than 0.5 x 109 cells/L 2. Patients suspected of having febrile neutropenia should undergo: Febrile neutropenia (FN) is characterized by a decrease in neutrophils number to values below 500 cells/ mm3 and an occurrence of fever higher or similar to38.3ºC.

The MASCC Risk Index for Febrile Neutropenia identifies patients at low risk for poor outcome with febrile neutropenia.

Patients suspected of having febrile neutropenia should undergo: Neutropenic fever is when there is a single oral temperature greater than or equal to 101 F, or a temperature greater than or equal to 100.4 F for at least an hour, with an absolute neutrophilic count (ANC) of less than 1500 cells/microliter. In severe neutropenia, the ANC is less than 500 per micro … Neutropenia is an abnormally low concentration of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) in the blood. Neutrophils make up the majority of circulating white blood cells and serve as the primary defense against infections by destroying bacteria, bacterial fragments and immunoglobulin -bound viruses in the blood.

Epidemiology, Etiology, Pathophysiology and Treatment Acute leukemias are a group of aggressive malignant diseases associated with a high degree of morbidity and mortality. An important cause of both the latter is infectious complications. 1. Febrile neutropenia is defined as: • Fever higher than 38.3°C OR higher than 38.0°C for more than 1 hour, in a patient who has received chemotherapy in the past month, AND • Neutrophils less than 0.5 x 109 cells/L 2. Patients suspected of having febrile neutropenia should undergo: The Infectious Diseases Society of America defines fever in neutropenic patients as a single oral temperature of ≥38.3°C (101°F) or a temperature of ≥38.0°C (100.4°F) sustained over a one-hour period [ 2 ].
